Annual Refresher Courses

Every California security guard must complete 8 hours of continuing education each year to keep their registration current with BSIS. Valley Guard Training offers the full range of approved refresher courses online.

How the requirement works

Your first year — 40 hours total. The 8-hour initial guard card course, plus 32 hours of continuing education: 16 hours within your first 30 days, and 16 more within six months.
Every year after — 8 hours. An annual refresher, due each year following the year you received your guard card.

How the annual refresher works

There is no single “refresher class.” You choose any two 4-credit-hour courses from our online catalog. Two courses at four hours each meets the 8 hours BSIS requires for the year.

Each of our 4-hour continuing education courses includes an hour of Use of Force instruction — so whichever two you choose, you satisfy the BSIS Use of Force requirement automatically. There is no specific course you have to hunt for.

Completed online, at your own pace

All refresher courses are completed online through Guard Boss. Start and stop whenever you like — your progress is saved. Your certificate is available to print or email the moment you finish, and your training records stay in your account permanently.

Most courses are also offered in Spanish.
