Get your BSIS baton permit in one day. Classroom instruction plus hands-on practice at our Van Nuys facility, taught by a BSIS-licensed baton instructor.

Reserve Your Seat
Pay the $135 class fee online. Registration must be prepaid.
Take the Class
One day in Van Nuys. Starts at 9:00 am sharp. We provide the baton.
Submit to BSIS
Apply on BreEZe or by mail with the state fee and your certificate.
Get Your Permit
BSIS mails your baton permit to you. It’s good for 2 years.
Total Cost
The class fee is paid to us. The state fee is paid to BSIS when you apply.
What You’ll Learn
An 8-hour BSIS-certified course: lecture, demonstration and practical drills.
Moral & Professional Responsibilities
Ethics and professionalism, responsibility and liability of baton use, professional standards and conduct.
De-escalation & Communication
Threat reduction, respectful communication, active listening, body language awareness and tactical de-escalation.
Legal Aspects
Guard and employer responsibilities under BSIS law, reporting requirements, criminal, civil and vicarious liability, and Penal Code sections on baton use.
Appropriate Use of Force
The objectively reasonable standard, deadly force limits, levels of resistance and force, and case law examples.
Baton Familiarization
Straight, expandable and side-handle batons, plus approved materials, specifications and limitations.
First Aid for Baton Injuries
Recognizing and caring for fractures, bleeding and shock, and what to do until medical aid arrives.
Baton Handling Fundamentals
Stances and grips, target areas vs. vital areas to avoid, blocking, control and retention techniques.
Practical Application & Drills
Drawing and recovery, defensive strikes to approved target areas, blocking, and supervised scenarios.
To pass: a written exam and a practical skills demonstration. You leave with a certificate of completion; BSIS issues the official permit.
Good to Know
Don’t Let It Expire
Baton permits expire two years after BSIS issues them. An expired permit can’t be renewed; you’d apply for a new initial permit.
Lost Your Permit?
No retest needed. Fill out the BSIS replacement application with your employer and mail it with the $25 fee. Allow 4–6 weeks.
