Re-Qualifications
Keep your firearm permit or certification current. Valley Guard Training offers live-fire re-qualifications for BSIS Exposed Firearms Permits, HR-218 (LEOSA), and active Department of Corrections (CDCR) officers, all at our Van Nuys range. Walk-ins are welcome. No appointment needed.
Here’s what we offer
BSIS Exposed Firearms Permit Re-Qualification
Priced by the number of calibers on your permit: $35 for the first caliber and $20 for each additional caliber. Lane fee included. Common calibers: 9mm, .40, .45, and .38/.357.

Your firearms permit is valid for two years, and BSIS requires four re-qualifications during that time:
- Two during the first year after your permit is issued
- Two during the second year
- Each one must be at least four months apart
- Every caliber listed on your permit must be qualified each time
- Each visit includes the required review of de-escalation of force
Qualifications 1 through 3 take about two hours. Qualification 4 takes about three hours, because we put together your renewal packet at that visit.
Don’t let your permit expire. Submit your renewal and all four re-qualifications to BSIS 60 to 120 days before your permit’s expiration date. The BSIS renewal fee is $126. Once a permit expires, it can’t be renewed, and you’ll have to apply for a new one.
HR-218 (LEOSA) Re-Qualification
For qualified retired law enforcement officers carrying under HR-218 / LEOSA. Federal law requires you to qualify with your firearm at least once every 12 months. Priced per gun: $35 for the first gun and $20 for each additional gun. Lane fee included. Same pricing as the chart above.
Department of Corrections (CDCR) Re-Qualification
For active CDCR officers. Lane fee included.

Ammo and rentals
- Ammo: $25 per 50 rounds for standard calibers
- Bringing your own gun? You’re welcome to use your own ammo
- Gun rental: no charge. You only pay for the ammo
All qualifications are live fire on our range. We don’t use simulators.
How it works
Walk in any day we’re open. No appointment is needed. Please arrive at least 2 hours before closing, or 3 hours before closing if it’s your 4th BSIS qualification.

What to bring
- A valid photo ID
- Your BSIS Exposed Firearms Permit, retired law enforcement ID (HR-218), or CDCR ID
- Your firearm(s), or use one of our rentals at no charge
